I have a disposition to hear colors

Each album records what is close to my heart. But only after experiences of stage I feel I can go to the studio and record materials. At that moment I thought very seriously to record works by Debussy and Szymanowski, then chose the ones that I played during the last concert seasons.

The greatest inspiration was Debussy and his music. I tried to bring about such a situation in which I can enter very deeply into the work itself, in its logic and meaning. I was searching for the style of composers that I feel close to me and want to play. The most important thing is to make my interpretation of Debussy and not the interpretation of others. Of course, all interpretations of Debussy familiar to me are part of the history of the work, but the composer, knowledge of his style and my intuition are very important to me.

The most important thing is to choose the piano. It must be a piano, which allows me to look for colors, shades of sound, and also the piano featuring large volume of the sound, powerful bass, which is very necessary for example for Szymanowski's Sonata. I managed to find such an ideal piano in Hamburg. I chose an instrument that already knew from the concerts in the city. Another important step is working in the studio. Arranging the microphones to render spaciousness for recording and all the nuances as well. This recording was made of the four side sound. Unlike my previous solo albums, but the quality, facilities, equipment were actually the same.

When I play, different images appear. With pieces by Debussy, the images are an integral part of impressionist thinking about music. In this case, you need to hear colors, see color in a way. In Szymanowski's compositions, I also hear the entire coloristic spectrum. I have such a disposition to hear colors. A specific tonality reminds me of a particular color, eg: B major is orange, G major is green, D major is blue. Fortunately, these colors are not dominant and don’t interfere with interpretation and searching for other colors. When I play a song written in the key of A major, it's all yellow and strongly motivates me to look for other shades. Colours play a very important role in music and I try to follow this style.

The description of his trait of "synesthesia" got reactions from several fans.
This is another interview (2010) in which Blechacz talks about his tendency to "hear colors" since his childhood.  Try & read it if you are interested in♫

"Mam dwie przypadłości: słuch absolutny i słyszenie kolorami. Określona tonacja, może nie każda, ale większość, ma u mnie konkretny kolor, np. H-dur intensywny pomarańczowy, G-dur zawsze zielony, D-dur niebieski, A-dur żółty. To może wydawać się dziwne, ale po prostu tak widzę, tak widziałem muzykę od dzieciństwa".

In Japan, the new album (import from EU) was released today♫
I picked up the booked CD on my way home and now am submerged in the world of Szymanowski, understanding what Blechacz said in the trailer video.

".....everything sounded so beautiful, heart-breakingly beautiful,.."

From the CD cover:
"An emerging titan" (San Francisco Classical Voice) plays two composers closest to his heart, Debussy and the pianist's great Polish compatriot Szymanowski.
"There's a lot of expression in Szymanowski's sonata - beautiful melodies, interesting harmony and wonderful modulations - I think audiences will love it".(Rafał Blechacz)

My heart is completely broken.

From (Jan. 15) introduces Rafał Blechacz's new album of Debussy and Szymanowski.
*by Magdalena Talik

The winner of the Chopin Competition six years ago chose works by Claude Debussy and Szymanowski. The album will be released by the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon. Universal, Rafał Blechacz’s recordings distributor, stresses that the pianist is one of the most respected artists, sought by DG in its catalog. CDs by the 26-year-old winner of the prestigious competition have been spread worldwide in the circulation of 160,000 copies, an excellent result. Blechacz already recorded for Deutsche Grammophon three albums....The third one was for the two piano concertos by Chopin, recorded with one of the best European orchestras, Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, conducted by Jerzy Semkow.

Blechacz official website updated.
Reviews for 2011 concerts updated.

The recording session for his latest album was held in January last year in Hamburg and it is long-awaited by people who love Claude Debussy’s music. Blechacz’s fans who had the opportunity to be at his recital in Duszniki in 2004, well remember that he played there Estampes by Debussy, which is now included in the disc for DG. It’s completed by Pour le Piano (also by Debussy) and less-known works by Karol Szymanowski - Sonata Op. 8 and the Prelude and Fugue in C sharp minor. This combination is not coincidental. In an interview promoting the album, Blechacz explains that he chose both composers to show the difference between impressionism and expressionism.

The release date is scheduled for 7 February in Poland.

(I intentionally deleted some words that I believe Blechacz didn’t utter in his interview for the promotion video.  I'm looking forward to reading more interviews by Blechacz and his words elaborating impressionism and expressionism.)

".....With the single exception of his compatriot Chopin, Szymanowski was unique in his ability to speak straight to the heart with his music. That was what he wanted. And there is no doubt that listeners are right to describe him as an Expressionist. Szymanowski’s musical language is filled with emotion, intuition and inspiration and with wit, voluptuousness and yearning. These were the qualities that struck Rafał Blechacz when, still little more than a child, he first heard Szymanowski’s music while at a recital by Jerzy Godziszewki.....several pieces by Szymanowski, among them Metopes and Masks, emotionally charged works full of sensual sonorities and remotely reminiscent of the mysticism of a composer like Scriabin but entirely distinctive in tone. The young Rafał Blechacz was fired up by a very real desire to enter this world, which he did by the circuitous route of the Variations op. 3. ..."(Jürgen Otten)

From Universal Music Germany - Rafał Blechacz gives four concerts in April

Universal Music Germany as of January 12,

(Rough outline)

Poland's most renowned young pianist Rafał Blechacz gives only about 40 concerts a year. Therefore, the audiences of four concerts in Germany last autumn were particularly happy, getting a foretaste of the new album by the introverted pianist from Deutsche Grammophon. The program included - in addition to Mozart and Bach- pieces by Debussy and Szymanowski, which are also the focus of his upcoming recitals/album.

The young Pole, the winner of the 15th International Chopin Competition in 2005 with a clear superiority, won four special prizes. Reviewers were induced to praise him with superlatives; The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "... we were witnessing the birth of a Titan ... he will earn himself a place among the greatest ...". Musik & Theater mused about the Blechacz phenomenon; "What exactly is it that the piano playing of the young Pole so fascinating?  It is the unspoiled authenticity of this artist." And the French Diapason postulated that, "what makes his personality, a mixture of naivety, clarity and classicism."

Piano fans from Germany can take on four concerts in April 2012, an idea of the widely praised Pole.

April 16   Großer Sendesaal im NDR, Hannover
April 18   Laeiszhalle (Großer Saal), Hamburg
April 20   Kongresshaus Heidelberg
April 27   Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Liederhalle Stuttgart

From Russian websites

As I wrote as a comment of the previous post, this blog doesn't cover news/info. from sources written in Russian, Chinese, Korean and other non-Latin alphabet languages.  As an experiment, I googled by Рафал Блехач (Russian for Rafał Blechacz) and tremendous amount of information appeared.  It probably will take a whole week if I try to go over all the available contents.

This is from  The page looks like debriefing a bunch of art and cultural events of November 11, 2011.  See 02:24 -02:33 of this video and you'll see Rafał Blechacz playing with an orchestra and the narration includes such words as Rafał Blechacz, Warsaw, music, Chopin, Szymanwski and Grzegorz Nowak.  I believe  it is a fraction from the concert at Salle Pleyel, Paris.  Pardon me me if it is not (My knowledge of Russian is ZERO.)
Now I remember that one of the audience members told me that there were TV cameras apparently shooting the concert at Salle Pleyel on that day.

Correction: I then found that this video clip of Blechacz is NOT shot on Nov. 11, 2011. It is from the concert in Moscow in May 2006. Sorry!! (added by Akiko, Jan.9)

Also you can hear an interview that Blechacz gave on Feb. 22, 2010 in Warsaw, just after performing Chopin's concerto in F minor (conductor: Antoni Wit) to inaugurate Chopin's 200th Birthday Week,

Click on the red speaker icon at the bottom to hear the interview.  (English with Russian translation.)

Blechacz performed Chopin's concerto with Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra (conductor: Valery Gergiev) at Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory on May 7, 2006.  It looks like that this website offers charged streaming service of the video of the concert that was televised in Feb. 2010. (I have no guts to try the streaming, though.) You can see some pictures on this site of Blechacz- then 20 years old.
